Obverse DesignHead of the nymph Arethusa facing left, wearing an ampyx (headband) and earring, with her hair bound in a net, surrounded by four dolphins. The inscription 'ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ' (of the Syracusans) is often present.
Reverse DesignQuadriga (four-horse chariot) driven by a charioteer (often identified as Demeter or Persephone) holding a goad, crowned by Nike (Victory) flying above. The exergue (space below the chariot) often contains a signature or symbol.
