Obverse DesignPost-reform (from 696/697 CE / 77 AH under Caliph Abd al-Malik): Central inscription of the Shahada (Islamic creed: 'There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner'). Marginal inscription often states the mint and Hijri date. Earlier issues (pre-reform) often imitated Byzantine designs, such as the standing Caliph or emperor, but with added Arabic inscriptions.
Reverse DesignPost-reform (from 696/697 CE / 77 AH): Central inscription often Surah 112 (Al-Ikhlas: 'Allah is One, Allah is the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'). Marginal inscription often part of Surah 9, verse 33 ('Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. He was sent with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it victorious over every other religion, however much the idolaters may detest it.'). Earlier issues (pre-reform) also imitated Byzantine designs, such as a cross on steps, but with added Arabic inscriptions.
